Mushrooms in my house plants!!!

Postby Ellie » Thu, 11 Jun 2009 13:28:41 GMT

My Peace LIlies and Spiders love to be on the porch in the summer, but I just found yellow mushrooms in one of them! I pulled four mushrooms out and I don't think I got to the roots. They don't seem to have hurt my Peace Lily at all, but I'm worried about what happens at the root level. Do the mushrooms take over? Is there a way to get rid of them? Should I repot?

This is a plant to which I have a sentimental attachment. It's the one I brought home from my grandma's funeral and the first plant I ever kept alive.

In all likelihood, they pose no problem. And there's no way you got all the roots. Fungi have a mycelial mass that is comparable to roots, but is considerably denser (usually).

If the plants haven't been repotted in a while (more than 2 years), that would likely be beneficial to the plant. But the fungus will still be there, even if you manage to bare-root the plants. Bits of mycelia will still be around.

All in all, it's most likely not a worry. Erm, as long as nobody is inclined to try eating them, that is.

What about my dog? I don't suppose you know about that. If he smelled them and went nosing around in the pot, would he be poisoned? Should I ask a vet?

Definitely a vet question.
