Eaten alive

Postby The Robot » Sun, 31 May 2009 20:52:48 GMT

I'm not sure what's doing it, but small holes are appearing in the leaves of the broccoli and the basil, but the tomato leaves are spared. What could possibly be eating them??? What can I do?

I think I was told slugs of some kind, not sure.

Welllllll, look at the undersides of the leaves being damaged. Any critters there? I think you might have cabbage loopers, at least on the broccoli.

As for slugs, they leave shiny tracks wherever they travel. Even when those dry, there are still sparkly remnants.

You could use an insecticidal soap for the caterpillars (if you see them). If there aren't many, handpick and squish them.

I hope this helps.

On topic, but not exactly the way the thread started:

Chiggers are becoming very active/numerous.

Gardeners, or anybody who gets outdoors for extended periods, may wish to apply insect repellents effective against these as well as mosquitoes.

For those who don't know, chiggers are tiny insects that seem to like getting into confined areas (under socks and waistbands, as well as in places that are particularly sensitive, both physically and socially  ), where they bite and inject enzymes which will result later in a red bump that itches like all get out!

I've had as many as three dozen bites at one time, and I can tell you that it's really, really worth the time and effort to put on an insect repellent to avoid those!
