Peonies question

Postby catnipandcarrots » Wed, 03 Jun 2009 14:35:56 GMT

I planted my first peony bush last year and this year was it's first bloom. But there were only 8 flowers. Now the blooms are dead. Should I deadhead them and what should I do to encourage more blooms next year? Should I cut the plant back this fall? A green thumb I am not and you all are killing me with the fancy names! :P I can identify about 6 different plants!

Yours looks very nice! Quite often the stems aren't strong enough to hold up the flowers. So, when you're looking to buy peonies, make sure they are bred to grow strong stems.

Now that yours is done blooming, you can cut back the stems that held the blooms. Otherwise they may expend energy developing seeds. You'd rather have that energy turned into more blooms next year!

Not much else to do besides cut the foliage once it dies back in Autumn.
