Patey and the Popcorn Plant

Postby Ellie » Tue, 19 May 2009 18:30:09 GMT

Patey, we must have discussed this over live chat because I can't find what I thought was a thread about the popcorn plant! Anyway...

When I went to plant the poor bedraggled thing  I thought to myself, now how can I nurse this thing so I don't lose it? Then my indoor-houseplant skills kicked in and I decided to treat it as if it was an indoor plant. I repotted it. In so doing, I discovered it was fairly root bound in clay like soil. I freed it of the clay as much as I could and replanted it in some fresh, loose potting soil. I like having it in the pot because I can keep a better eye on it and move it if I need to depending on what kind of light it needs.

Anyway, I thought I'd let you know. You may want to unbound your roots a bit if the soil you had was anything like what was on mine.

Photos? Uh, Patey? Ours aren't exactly picture worthy at the moment. Though mine did perk up over night! They won't quite stand upright on their own yet, but they have much less limpness to them this morning. I'm considering cutting them own about half way because they're a bit spindly, but I'm scared to do it. Can all plants be pruned back?

MG, I had a thought. If you were brave enough to trust me with the same plant you gifted us last year, do you suppose it would do well in a container for a year? I seem to do better with them in containers until I learn about them. It sounds odd, I know, but when they're in containers I can move them and figure out where in my yard they like it best, and pull them in if it frosts and I know how to plant them. And I don't forget about them, which I'm guilty of when they're in my garden.

Now I have to say that they do stand straight upright (obviously NOT at the moment!) The funny thing is this actually looks so much better than it did

- There is a big probability that I have have secured it's demise  but would really like to keep it alive!

I'm glad you posted it! Now, do you suppose we can cut them back? Their weight seems too much for the plant. They're too spindly to support themselves.

When I saw them in MIL garden they were standing upright... and quite attractive considering that they don't have any blossoms.

My thought is to not cut them - LOL at this stage we might both be having a ceremonial burial of the popcorn plants

They appear to just be in a minor shocked state. I'd imagine that they'll come out of it soon (within a week). I've not heard of this plant neither....seems kinda odd (from the quick googling).
