My Orchid ;-)

Postby HRHPatey » Tue, 12 May 2009 11:39:24 GMT

My Grandad grew all variations of Orchids in his greenhouse. Growing up it was something that I associated to him :D When he passed a few years ago, my dear friends bought me an orchid plant (such a gift !)
Unfortunately, it didn't last long in my care .... I was devastated....

My sweet hubby, bought me a new one for Mother's Day .....

My goal was IS to keep this beauty alive ...... I noticed that it started to get what appears to be mold growing on the soil..... then I remembered that happened before (the dead one :( ) I do not over water it - maybe once every five or so days .... I should say I didn't thinkI over watered it

My SIL told me to put an ice cube in it every other week or so - Does that sound about right????

Erm, I have heard of that. Haven't tried it, personally.

I have killed several orchids myself, by the way.

I have to admit.....they are too finicky for me to attempt to have one or two or three. My aunt has good luck with them....she says that you have to keep moving them around until you find the perfect spot for it (temp and lighting).

Thank you Guys !!

I was aware that Orchids were rather sensitive, so maybe I shouldn't feel completely horrible

Unfortunately in my House my window sils are approx 15cm in width, so sills are not available for plants which require sunlight... I have to place them as close to a window as my furniture allows. I have the Orchid on our CD stand which does permit sunlight without being too close to an airvent.... I hope that this is a 'happy' place because I have no other options.

Ironically, a Poinsetta plant that I got just before Christmas is still alive and thriving, obviously no blooms are present and although the Cat is rather partial to the odd nibble, it has remained healthy

I think I have a friend of mine that grows these in his basement. Last time I was over there he had all types of exotics growing there. Not not illegal ones. He has a huge professional canopy light system. Hes older and likes exotic plants throughout his home.
Patey if the plant isn't dead yet i will call him and see if he can nurture yours back to life for you.

Congratulations! That's always a good feeling. I have some neglected plants now. I think it's just because it's finally hot out and they're feeling it.

Definately looking better - I forgot to mention previously that I also moved it  My back door is in the living room, I have an end table beside my chair, so I put it on the end table - lots of light and hopefully, between the repotting and change of placement it will stay with me awhile  All I need now is to keep the cat from nibbling
