Got rabbits?

Postby catnipandcarrots » Tue, 14 Jul 2009 13:21:08 GMT

Got another call last night about pesky rabbits eating the garden. Thought I would pass along a bit of advice. Don't try and trap a rabbit. They really can have a heart attack and die instantly from stress. When you see one standing still in your yard, the rabbit thinks it is invisible but his heart is racing nonetheless.

Deer-Off II works wonderfully to keep rabbits from eating your plants. It can also be used on vegetables, flowering bushes, etc. Is listed as organic approved from the USDA. Also repels deer and squirrels.

Whatever this bush is in my yard, the rabbits love it. Every year it normally gets about a foot tall before I walk outside one particular morning and it is down to the nub in the dirt. This spring, I sprayed on the Deer Off every few weeks and it is now over 4' tall and maybe 5' wide. The spray smells horrible (says it is putrid eggs and garlic) but it works. I'd imagine some chicken wire around a dedicated garden plot also works well. It is made by Havahart (the makers of the traps) but I think I bought this stuff at Lowes but Home Depot & Tractor Supply also carry it. Not cheap tho, about $15+ a bottle.

We've got a ton of rabbits. Don't seem to be bothering anything though (last year was a different story). Noticing way more this year that last, as well. They are pretty tame....don't mind the dog or when we walk near them.
