Fertelizers?

Postby Beasly » Wed, 06 May 2009 11:13:58 GMT

Why does my Weed n Feed seem not to be doing anything with my yard?

Any suggestions or personal preferences on types to get?

Yeah...Scott's Lawn.

After looking at a few lawns around, I understand why DH has not wanted me to give them up.

We have been with Columbia for several years. Weeds are not a problem as a result.

First off.....LOVE THE BORDER HERE!!!

And now on topic. I've decided that I am giving it this year and then I am going to call in the pros. The one neighbor does a great job on his own. I'm hoping to get my under some kind of control....but the other neighbor has quite a few dandelions that must float over my way. I tend to walk over there from time to time and pull off the flowers.....just like with his thistle. :(

I have used Scotts fertilizer (out of the bag) this year and last. This year I threw in a little weed-n-feed spray to see if it'll help any. Not impressed yet. It's early, I guess.

There's obviously a lot of pride in having a "clean" lawn, and dandelions seem to be the most obvious sign that something is "wrong." Those and medick (Medicago species; it resembles clover in some ways, but has small yellow flowers and self-sows like crazy) are the only plants I try to control in my lawn. Okay, crabgrass is a pain, too.

I use a selective herbicide that will control (read: "kill") broadleaf plants when properly applied (ALWAYS read and follow label directions; did you know that applying pesticides in a manner contrary to label directions is a Federal crime?).

The rest of the year I don't apply anything else. Water doesn't count, right?

I don't collect my grass clippings. Mowing almost as high as the mower deck can be set, all the clippings are "mulched." In the fall, most of the leaves that land in turf meet the same fate (those that are collected go to the compost, never the curb).

My lawn is not weed free (the kids earned $6 apiece collecting dandelion blooms at $.02 a head!), but it's pretty clean and mostly green (one stretch in front needs to be overseeded. one of these days...).

To control weeds I use Ortho weed b gone. I only use milorganite as fertilizer which is organic. My lawn is thick and green all summer with very little water. :D
