Dare I say this is much more common than is reported and the evidence is indisputable!!

New mom leaves N.D. hospital with the wrong baby

AP Williston Herald
WILLISTON, N.D. – A hospital in northwestern North Dakota is investigating how the mother of a newborn went home with the wrong baby.

Officials with the Mercy Medical Center in Williston say the mistake was discovered within an hour and the mother was quickly reunited with her own child.

Mercy Chief Financial Officer Kerry Monson would not release details about how the mix-up happened or what families were involved.

She said in a statement that hospital employees are disheartened by the incident. She says officials are reviewing policies and procedures and will take appropriate action.

I have nightmares of just such a situation. When our oldest was growing up, I often wondered if he had been switched because his coloring is so much darker than mine or my husband's. Now that he is older and an exact replica of his father, I have no doubts. But I used to play through scenarios in my mind and always came back to the fact that I could never give up my son, even if I found he wasn't really mine. But then what of the one that was? It's just heart wrenching to think about.

Very scary indeed!

Both of my Children were born at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati. At the time of birth, the babies, myself and Husband were issued the id bands on our wrists (the babies had additional ones on their ankles)
Specifically in my Son's case, they took him away briefly from my room, but before they did they verified all of our bands then repeated this procedure when they brought him back. I thought that was an excellent way of preventing any issues... I can see that there might be situations where this might not be the case, ie: emergencies..

One hopes that there are few instances, but in life mistakes happen, it just hurts your heart to contemplate it....

What love I bore to thee."
