respect

Let's hear your thoughts on it.

Some say they feel it's something to be earned before it can be given.
Others say they feel it should be given first and can be withdrawn if circumstances dictate.

What do you think, and why?

Given and then withdrawn if the circumstances dictate.

I wouldn't DISrespect someone just because I didn't know them and they hadn't had the opportunity to "earn" my respect.
I was blessed with a birth and a death, and I guess I just want some say in between.

I believe respect is something that one applies to another through the course of 'knowing them.' In the case of a public figure, I believe we might acknowledge the position and assume a 'respectable' stance because of that (until offered reason to withdraw it.)

I have encountered people that I have had respect for, then lost it because they did/said something that was (IMO) an infringement of a moral code I had. I have beliefs which are steadfast, to go against them is a deal breaker.. tough thing to admit really!

I can honestly say in my adult life this has occurred with maybe three people. It is not about forgiveness, I can do that, but about having respect for them as an individual.

Great question MG!!!

I respect all people as a human being, but I do not think that any one person deserves more respect because of their position. Obama is no more human than one of my co-workers; therefore, I hold no more respect for him than them. I respect my co-workers more actually because they are hardworking, honest people.

In my opinion, respect is akin to love, in that ones capacity to love isn't something that diminishes or increases with giving or receiving. In other words, it's not something that can be "banked."

I tend to honor with respect unless I have been given cause to treat a person otherwise.

I'm not concerned with your liking or disliking me . . . All I ask is that you respect me as a human being.
