Pharmacist Sentenced For Toddler's Fatal Overdose

This story is nothing short of shocking and horribly tragic.... The report states that after making this dreadful error he was hired by a different pharmacy and continued to make errors.... HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN?????

We have such faith in our Pharmacists, mostly because we have no way to verify that dosages / contraindications are correct or not.... I cannot suggest just how unnerving such errors make me feel.

pharmacists can make repeated mistakes that do not have to be reported to the state board of pharmacy.
This needs to be changed - everyone should have accountability in every profession!

Report: WCPO
CLEVELAND -- In an emotional hearing, a Cleveland pharmacist was sentenced Friday for the dosing error that claimed the life of a 2-year-old girl.

Eric Cropp will spend six months in jail and six months on house arrest. He will be placed on probation for three years and must serve 400 hours of community service.

The child’s mother, Emily Jerry, pleaded with the judge for Cropp to receive the maximum sentence of five years in jail.

The mixture Emily got was 24 times the prescribed amount of saline. It was prescribed during what was supposed to be the little girl’s last chemotherapy treatment.

Emily went into a drug-induced allergy and never came out of it.

Turning to Cropp, Kelly Jerry expressed the intensity of her emptiness and loss.

“Emily beat her cancer, only to suffer a horrific and painful death,” Jerry said through tears. “Mr. Cropp, you have no idea how you’ve devastated so many lives. You never will. Even if you were to receive the maximum of five years, it will never compare to the lifetime of pain and suffering I and my family will have to endure.”

An investigation by NewsChannel 5 in Cleveland revealed how pharmacists can make repeated mistakes that do not have to be reported to the state board of pharmacy.

After his mistake, Cropp was hired by another pharmacy and continued to make mistakes, WEWS reported.

His license was finally revoked.

In May, Cropp pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter.

When our youngest was just days old, he was prescribed something for reflux (I think it was). The prescribed dose SHOULD have been .03 but instead ended up 30. That's a HUGE difference! Fortunately I knew better, not to mention the incorrect dose rivaled his total intake of milk for the day!

I wonder how many pharmacy mistakes are caused by unreadable prescriptions? My doctor's scriblings often leave me wondering how anyone could read them. I wish he would go to computer generated scripts but he is old-fashioned. For instance, I once brought him a disk from my heart doc in California and he just looked at it and said, um, I can't read that, I don't have a computer.
