Pardoned U.S. Journalists Return Home From North Korea

Postby HRHPatey » Wed, 05 Aug 2009 14:07:50 GMT

I was watching this as it took place this morning. The news commentator was offering a background to the story and was saying that the Nth Koreans had suggested back on July 24th IF President Clinton would go over and meet with officials, they in turn would agree to release without hindrance or conditionsthese two young Ladies.

I believe the release was a coup for the Ladies and their families, we all know that this could have been a very different situation. Thank goodness President Clinton was willing to take up the issue and go over to secure their release. :)

In a tearful reunion, the two American journalists jailed in North Korea since March walked into the embrace of their families at an airport hangar in Los Angeles Wednesday morning after returning home with the help of former President Bill Clinton.

Journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee appeared healthy as they walked off the plane. Ling raised her arms in celebration as she walked down the steps. Lee immediately greeted her 4-year-old daughter Hannah.

"Now we stand here home and free," Ling said.

Clinton walked off the private jet a few minutes after the journalists and shook hands with the families. He said in a written statement that he shares their "deep sense of relief" that the reporters have returned safely.

President Obama said he was "extraordinarily relieved" at their return.

"The reunion that we've all seen on television I think is a source of happiness not only for the families but for the entire country," Obama said, adding that he spoke with the families Tuesday after learning that Lee and Ling were on the plane home. He thanked Clinton as well as former Vice President Al Gore, who co-founded the Current TV company that employed the journalists, for working toward their release. Gore spoke briefly at the hangar in Burbank, Calif.

I hate to start debate? But do you think Clinton would of gone if it wasn't pre determined he was going to get the journalist back? Basically is this a PR scheme to make the administration look good? Just curious...

I don't think this had anything to do with Political posturing .... well, except on the part of the Nth Koreans

I was thinking myself about the Clinton presidency..... will have to research, but what was his relationship with the Nth Koreans, his foreign policies etc???? Could this be viewed internationally, as the Nth Koreans having a 'you come to us and beg' type of situation? (Please note, I am surmising and most deffinately not educated on the subject!)

The curious part over all, is that the Nth Koreans were willing to let them go. If they truly believed that they deserved incarceration, (after all, they were tried in Court) why would they then release them? What (if any) deal was made? Will 'we' ever know?

Much to ponder..... I am doubtful that we will ever know the conversations (evidently about 3hrs worth) that took place behind closed doors.... Debates are useful, if not imperative to decipher the 'all aspects' type of conversations
