AKRON, Ohio -- The county that includes Akron has become the latest area in Ohio to ban text messaging while driving.

The measure approved by the Summit County Council on Monday carries $150 fines for violators caught reading or sending text messages from behind the wheel of a moving vehicle.

The texting ban is the first countywide ban in Ohio. It was proposed by County Councilman Jon Poda, who says the law will save lives and make roads safer.

The city of Cleveland has a similar ban, and proposals before the Ohio Legislature would ban texting while driving statewide.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says 18 states already have laws on the books against texting while you drive.

I find it somewhat amusing and yet disturbing we actually need a law to stop someone from doing one of the most idiotic, not to mention dangerous, things ever! :roll:

Although I don't see THAT MANY people applying make-up while driving or trying to do their hair while driving, it is definitely a dangerous distraction. Are we going to have to pass a law for those few stupid people too? I was behind a girl a couple of weeks ago who was using both hands to work on her hair while we were driving on Fields-Ertel.

I would challenge anyone who believes they can text while WALKING to give it their best shot..... I believe it would indicate the lack of attention given to a simple automated task. When attempting to drive and text is simply dangerous!

HBG - you made a great point!!! Drinking and driving is also a dangerous activity that required a law and STILL there are those who do it ~ some repeatedly!!
