MANCHESTER, N.H. – A New Hampshire man says he swiped his debit card at a gas station to buy a pack of cigarettes and was charged over 23 quadrillion dollars.

Josh Muszynski (Moo-SIN'-ski) checked his account online a few hours later and saw the 17-digit number — a stunning $23,148,855,308,184,500 (twenty-three quadrillion, one hundred forty-eight trillion, eight hundred fifty-five billion, three hundred eight million, one hundred eighty-four thousand, five hundred dollars).

Muszynski says he spent two hours on the phone with Bank of America trying to sort out the string of numbers and the $15 overdraft fee.

The bank corrected the error the next day.

Bank of America tells WMUR-TV only the card issuer, Visa, could answer questions. Visa, in turn, referred questions to the bank.

Haha, typical.

I'll bet they would be quick sharp to identity a source and resolution, if the $'s were being added to an account, rather than subtracted ..... Oi Vey

It's mind-blowing to think that their systems did not have a systemic check that would create a red-flag for transactions over......say $1,000,000. Not a lot of people going to purchase something with a card (debit or credit) that is over that much money. It's just common sense. As an auditor, this is very aggrevating.....as I can see several systemic checks that should have been in place.

On a side note.....a co-worker joked that it was the new cigarette tax, in order to pay for the new health care initiatives.

My credit card company will call to confirm any spending habit that seems erratic and confirm that it was indeed legit spending by this household and have done so at least three times when our pattern resembled the so called stimulus spending. (Actually it just appeared to be over 4 figures at various locations on the same day.) :D
