RIP

Whilst I am not familiar with Mr. Cronkite, I am aware of his reputation. His value as a journalist and newscaster is renown internationally.

NEW YORK (AP) - A CBS executive says retired CBS anchorman Walter Cronkite, "the most trusted man in America," has died at his home in New York. He was 92. CBS vice president Linda Mason says Cronkite died at 7:42 p.m. after a long illness with his family by his side.

He was the face of CBS News from 1962 to 1981, when stories ranged from the Kennedy assassination to Watergate and the Iranian hostage crisis.

What love I bore to thee."

Accolades came from all sectors for this is truly a passing of an era which shall never be again. Incredible. Yet, he has been retired so long, most will remember only what time is taken to read today.

Authoritative but warm, he was considered the most trusted man in America. He seemed like one of us, choking back tears on the air when President Kennedy died and whooping like a schoolboy when another moon shot went up. He was America's uncle. We even called him Uncle Walter. Most famously upon returning from Vietnam after the Tet offensive and broadcasting his opinion that it was time to negotiate an end to a war he felt America could not win. "If I've lost Cronkite," replied President Lyndon Johnson, "I've lost middle America."

Many considered him a liberal, and maybe for his era he was but, he kept it hidden and was able to separate his professional obligation as a journalist from his political beliefs. A liberal then holds no comparison to the designation of today's radical liberals!

He also knew when to get out, retiring on top to the dismay of many and enjoying a long retirement. There will never be another like him as this era is gone for good with the advent of 24/7 cable news.
