Fireplace question...

Postby HRHPatey » Wed, 04 Nov 2009 15:23:28 GMT

We started using our fireplace (wood burning) about 4 years ago (I think!) It is not deep at all, can maybe only hold about 3 logs when stacked pyramid style. I have heard that one should have the flue (chimney) swept or inspected before a new 'season' what are your thoughts ?

My thoughts? get a gas insert! (seriously that's one of many things on the agenda) We have never cleaned ours in 12 winters, but have only used the prefab logs.

Your going to love my answer...........all depends..................... :) If the flu draws good and you burn seasoned wood, and if you haven't burned that many (chords) it may not. If you can get your hand up the chimney and find layers of creosote flaking (big thick cowpile looking chips) flaking off the inside of the flue, then it should be cleaned. If it is just black soot and not the described thick stuff then probably not. It takes a lot of wood burning to build up thick creosote. If you are using it as a romantic ambiance, then .......................... :o   :?:

Yes sir I would say that romantic ambience is about right

I wished I hadn't just taken your suggestion of opening the flue and putting my hand up it AAAAAHHHHH ! I now seriously look like a character from Mary Poppins (I know - sometimes I amaze myself!!!!!)

I can confirm (much to my chagrin) no cowpile, a little smattering of bird poop and about 4 wasps, the rest is powdery black soot ~ which seemingly, is most unattractive when worn as an accessory!!!

Gotcha.......... A vision of Dick van Dyke comes to mind for some reason................

congrats, you are now a member of the NACS member . National Association of Chimney Sweeps..... :D

If it "draws" well I doubt you have issues. Those "cowpile" layers of creisote are what becomes dangerous with a flue fire.
