Electronic Cigarettes

Postby HRHPatey » Tue, 21 Jul 2009 15:21:54 GMT

Once again *** sigh *** Hubby and I are attempting to quit smoking.

Last year I had 6 wonderful months of not smoking, then faltered, it was completely my fault, fell off the wagon with rapid speed - waaaa!

We both used the patches, at least for me, they were the buisiness  but not for DH who 'permitted' himself an occasional - which became the norm and before long, back to full time smoking....

DH researched and found out about the 'Electronic Cigarette' he ordered one for us both, his was for Marlboro Lights, mine for menthol (my choice.) His arrived yesterday, he used it and said that he not only did not smoke, he actually had NO DESIRE to. (Pretty impressive if you know his habit!)

Basically, you have cartridges which contain nicotine, when you draw on the cigarette, you get the nicotine without the tar, additives etc. You can lower the nicotine by purchasing lower grade cartridges and thus relieve your 'cravings' gradually. The 'smoke' is basically water vapor, therefore can be carried around and used as and when ... there are no odors (actually had DH blow in my face - silly- but I needed to know that it was odorless!)

My cigarette will be arriving within the next day or so and I will offer more details at that point (for anyone interested) I am actually excited about this.. I was so ashamed of myself when I went back to smoking after working so hard at the process of quiting!
I'll keep y'all posted (and will provide the info so that you can look it up if you are interested.)

Although we are both smokers, neither DH or I smoke around our Children, in the house or vehicle ..... The odorless water vapor is a huge plus - no more stinky smells on clothing ;-)

My sister had some of these and they were quite the novelty. They purchased not to quite smoking but as a way around the business smoking laws.

I used the ones without the smoke that are basically "tiparrellos" with a nicoitine cartridge inside, and found this very useful quitting! :) It helped to satisfy the hand urge mechanism and I would leave the cartidge in till I sucked the cotton out of it and was obviously getting little if any nicotine by that time but still receiving fulfillment. You obviously know what it takes from previous attempts and if you are not ready, it is a waste of time and self induced torture. :o Good luck.

I havn't smoked for 21/2 years but I will not say I have quite for I went 3 years once and started back. (I am weak of the flesh  )

You can do it Patey!! It's not easy and I don't know very many people who successfully quit on their first attempt.

I think it took me two or three tries and took my husband three attempts. I haven't had one in 12 years now and he hasn't had one in 4 or 5 years.

Oh no, sorry to cast a shadow over this, but it was on Yahoo and timely. If it is any consolation, I beleive very little of what I read about science, politics, or just about everything in general, whether I agree, like, disagree or whatever the case. Everyone seems to have an agenda, and truth is as forthcoming as landing a 747 in a thick fog. You don't really know where you are till the wheels hit the runway if in fact that is where you are.

FDA: Electronic cigarettes contain toxic chemicals

By MATTHEW PERRONE, AP Business Writer Matthew Perrone, Ap Business Writer – Wed Jul 22, 11:30 pm ET
WASHINGTON – Federal health officials said Wednesday they have found cancer-causing ingredients in electronic cigarettes, despite manufacturers' claims the products are safer than tobacco cigarettes.

The Food and Drug Administration said testing of products from two leading electronic cigarette makers turned up several toxic chemicals, including a key ingredient in antifreeze.

"Little is known about these products, including how much nicotine is there and what other chemicals may be there," said FDA's Deputy Commissioner Dr. Joshua Sharfstein.

FDA scientists said they tested 19 varieties of cigarettes, half of which contained forms of nitrosamine, a carcinogen known to cause cancer in humans. Many products which claimed to contain no nicotine actually had low levels of the stimulant.

Agency officials said the "quality control processes used to manufacture these products are inconsistent or nonexistent."

Brands tested by the agency included Smoking Everywhere, marketed by a Florida-based company, and NJoy Cigarettes, based in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The Electronic Cigarette Association said the FDA's testing was too narrow to reach "any valid and reliable conclusions."

But, so do cigarettes...I'm not saying they are safe or healthy (I don't have a clue) but the alternative isn't either. I guess it's a matter of weighing the risks with each. I don't smoke (actually have never even tried it) so I can't honestly say how I'd feel about it and whether the risk would be worth the "reward".

Fabulous

DH was the one doing all the research... As much as I am aware, our Electronic Cigarettes originate from England (not that it really matters!) I will show him the article ...

ADH you are correct, look at the statistics of Cigarettes and the value of Electronic cigs, I can't imagine that the risk factor are so significantly less (health wise)

Personally, I find it extremely frustration that something I find so deplorable has such a hold on me .... I chuckle when adding that the two easiest times of quitting were when preparing for, pregnant, and nursing my Children... Chuckle factor is the contemplation of ....... well, lets not go there  , there can only be the one immaculate conception    (Sorry Sweetie  )

I have got my EC and frankly, it was a novelty, which swiftly wore off within about an hour or so........ Being serious about my last statement brings me to the (sad yet true) perception, that if I wanted to enough, I would (and have) quit.

Personal demons aside....... I cannot suggest submission to this, but am evaluating the best course of action, and might be eating humble pie (a la mode) over the EC's

A friend of mine was hypnotized and didn't have another cigarette for 12 years afterwords (quit immediately). Maybe worth a shot?

I know she did it again recently, but I haven't talked to her much - I'll have to find out if it worked again this time.

Good luck Patey. It certainly is difficult. I quit July 2, 1995 and I still have strong urges on occasion. I smoked my last one just before going to the hospital after what turned out to be a heart attack requiring bypass surgery. Fear is the ultimate motivator.
