Deactivated Facebook

Postby Ellie » Fri, 04 Sep 2009 19:48:27 GMT

I just deactivated my Facebook account for a couple reasons. I thought you all may want to know that things like this are happening.

One, the parents of two of my students wanted to befriend me and I didn't think that professionally wise.

Two, porn was sent to my Facebook account in my uncle's name. I would be appalled if porn was sent to my Facebook friends in MY name. I don't want to be associated with anything like that.

(Now imagine if I befriended the parents from my first reason and then the second thing happened!  )

Three, there are too many scams. With each quiz you run the risk of inadvertently sign yourself up for a telephone charge, though I think you have to have the quiz sent to your phone to do that. There's a current scam out there where one of your "Friends" emails you saying they are stuck in Colorado and their money has been stolen, could you please wire money right away? Of course it's a scam and not your "Friend's" doing at all.

So, for all these reasons, I have signed off facebook.

A good way to prevent a great deal of issues is to make sure all your privacy settings are at their strictest. This would prevent people (parents) from seeing your account and thus not being able to befriend you. The quizes are dangerous because so many of them can take your information and sell it because that is basically what you are giving them permission to do when you use their service.
Everyone with sleeping problems should teach small children or take care of them all day.

I am very particular about the securities on my FB page..... I also do not respond to those 'crazy' emails... however, not to say that I haven't had an instance where I was exposed to a virus (seemingly through a friend.) All that said, honestly you could get virus exposure from being on your Computer! As long as all of your virus / spam catchers are up to date you are better prepared.

As far as FB itself goes, I couldn't live without it - it is a direct line to many of my Family and Friends, but that is just me and I understand why you would have concerns :)

Even if you did accept them as your friend (for the sake of not being rude I guess?), you could set it so they can't see anything but your profile (could not see your wall, posts, photos, etc.)
I was blessed with a birth and a death, and I guess I just want some say in between.

You can do that on an individual basis? I didn't know that. In any case, I don't seem to miss it. Then again, I've been terribly busy!

Yes you can - I actually have my settings according to how I accepted 'friends' As a MW player I needed to not permit access to my personal information, photo's video's, etc, so the settings came into play. Only my info and profile info are available to them. :)
