David Letterman Admits Affairs at Center of Extortion Arrest

Postby HRHPatey » Fri, 02 Oct 2009 06:51:27 GMT

I hate that there is even such a thing as extortion..... brings out chills for me, but the admittance of sexual contact with women (note the plural) on his staff made me sad too. There is such a thing as professional etiquette, this obviously didn't make it to David Letterman's 'top ten' :o

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Late-night host David Letterman acknowledged on Thursday's show that he had sexual relationships with female employees and that someone tried to extort $2 million from him over the affairs. CBS says an employee has been charged with attempted grand larceny in the case.
Letterman told his story during a taping of his show, mixing in jokes to an audience that seemed confused about what it was. He called it a "bizarre experience" that left him feeling disturbed and menaced.
In a release from the show's production company, Letterman said he referred the matter to the Manhattan district attorney's office. An investigation ended in an arrest Thursday after Letterman issued a phony $2 million check to keep the matter silent.
The network said late Thursday the person who was arrested works on the true-crime show "48 Hours" and has been suspended. A person with knowledge of the investigation said the suspect is Robert J. Halderman. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because authorities have not released the suspect's name.
A "48 Hours" producer named Joe Halderman was part of a team nominated for an Emmy for outstanding continuing coverage of a news story in a news magazine in 2008.
This is the headline of the day, but can anyone really be shocked. The most disturbing thing about this revelation may be his studio audience not being able to recognize fiction from reality and laughing through the entire confession, not just in the clip posted above, but in the long verision I saw on TV, it continues like a sixties laugh track, making me to ponder the underlying implications of not only Letterman's actions but the audience's perception as well. I find both actions almost equally appalling.
Did they think it was funny or are they so indoctrinated to laugh at anything, or is there much more that I have long suspected?
The admittance of affairs with employees also bothered me. I dunno, just seems kinda icky.
I stopped watching Letterman years ago when he stopped being funny.
I also stopped watching Letterman years ago .... (Post children - might have been a Geez I'm too tired thing :wink: )
Seriously, I found and still do that many of the 'talk show hosts' become rather pretentious .... a judgement for sure :oops: I can only imagine interviewing a gazillion people over a period of time can make you believe that you have seen/heard it all, but to then cast aside another's feelings in order to deliver a punch line - I'm no longer listening...
Shamefully, either we as the 'audience' are so desensitized to reality or we anticipate the glib comments (supposedly disguised with humor) as truth until refuted in the media.... Either way - we as a society have become shockingly apathetic ...... that was such a ramble I'm having difficulty understanding it myself :wink:
There are numerous aspects to this 'Headliner' that disturb me .... I guess I simply have to wait and watch, inevitably, the dirty laundry does have a nasty way of floating to the top :roll:
I"m not sure it's any more appauling than what you can see locally on a daily basis. Letterman's actions are no different than the boss who has a secretary, and is involved in an affair with said secretary. I see affairs going on all the time where I work. It's looked down upon but it's no different than what Letterman was involved in, except that the people I work with can't write a $2,000,000 check.
The only reason this made news is because of the extortion and his fame. Not the affairs. :shock:
And I agree. Letterman is not funny but is lame.
I taught him everything I know and he's still stupid. I don't understand it!!!
