Concealed arms reciprocity rejected by Senate

Postby blueblood » Wed, 22 Jul 2009 14:25:33 GMT

Anyone surprised at this. As Karen and Richard once said......"We've only just begun".

Constitution be damned!! We will legislate from here or the courts, but preferrably the latter since it is far less damaging politiically. Choose your poison!!!!

WASHINGTON – In a rare win for gun control advocates, the Senate on Wednesday rejected a measure allowing a person with a concealed weapon permit in one state to also hide his firearm when visiting another state.

The vote was 58-39 in favor of the provision establishing concealed carry permit reciprocity in the 48 states that have concealed weapons laws. That fell two votes short of the 60 needed to approve the measure, offered as an amendment to a defense spending bill.

"This is no minor shift in policy," said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif

Congress has also ignored urgings from President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder to revive a ban on military-style weapons that expired in 2004.

The concealed weapons measure, promoted by the National Rifle Association and Gun Owners of America, would have made a concealed weapon permit from one state valid in the 47 other states with permit laws. Only Wisconsin and Illinois have no carry permit laws.

Sen. David Vitter, R-La., another sponsor, reminded his colleagues that the NRA and Gun Owners of America were scoring the vote, meaning it would be considered in their election evaluation of lawmakers.

Blueblood,
What else do you know about this? The host on WPFB AM (yes. There's still someone who listens to AM radio)said this ruling elliminates all CCW permit holders from being able to carry outside the issuing state. I believe the host may be the former Middletown Police Chief. I suspect he's wrong, but I'm looking for more info, as I have a Florida CCW license and carry here in Ohio with it.
I taught him everything I know and he's still stupid. I don't understand it!!!

I'm not a lawyer but that appears to be exactly what this was all about was to keep people from packing accross state lines. Unless two states had a stand alone rciprocity law. I interpret it to be illegal.

"This is no minor shift in policy," said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif

Congress has also ignored urgings from President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder to revive a ban on military-style weapons that expired in 2004.

Exactly what he said he wouldn't do to get elected, he advocates now. He is melting down but with a full house Congress, insurmountable damage could occur in the next 3+ years. The only salvation that may slow them down would be their constituents whom will hold them accoutable for their actions. We are seeing this already on a broad scale especially with the "Blue Dogs".

Nothing wrong with AM. I would listen to it more but it is not healthy for my head. :x

So, even though Ohio has an agreement with Mich and Ky, we cannot carry into those states? Is that the jist of this whole deal? If that's the case then it is, indeed, illegal. I guess I'll be contacting my Senators once again!!!

It is my understanding that the majority of the states operate under two main CC Permits. If you have an Ohio and a Florida permit you can carry in most states. I know this because the guy who taught my course offered both.

I don't have my CCW. I just might take the class before it goes away.

We just need to get a group and all go together.
Stopped at the gun runner last night. Hopefully he will be open at noon today.

I'm in. I will ask the wife if she is interested. I beleive with her training at work she can bypass most of the class. I think that is what she told me. Sometimes I struggle with old man syndrome.

I initially got my Florida CCW license because Florida doesn't require Veterans to go through the 12 hour safety class, and vets don't have to be residents of Florida to get the CCW license. I've been around firearms my entire life and feel well qualified to carry a firearm, understand the repercussions of carrying and obey the law.
I also made the decision to obtain the Fl. license because it was good in 28 or 29 states, whereas Ohio was only honored in 7 or 9 at that time. I don't know in how many states Ohio's license is honored, but Ohio has one of the most stringent requirements for getting a CCW license.
For what it's worth (and to get the thread back on track), this bill failed to pass by only two votes and one of them is our very own Sen. Voinovich (R-Oh). The bill would have made it a federal requirement for all states with CCW laws to honor the licenses from other states, just as is done with Driver's licenses.
I, for one, plan to contact Sen. Voinovich's office and express my displeasure with his vote against this bill.
I taught him everything I know and he's still stupid. I don't understand it!!!
