Banned books week

Banned Books week is quickly approaching (Sept. 26- Oct. 3).

Here's some reading to get you in the mood:
...our whole system of government was based on the idea that the purpose of the state was to preserve individual liberties, not to dictate them. The founders uniformly despised many practices in England that compromised matters of individual conscience by restricting freedom of speech. Freedom of speech – the right to talk, write, publish, discuss – was so important to the founders that it was the first amendment to the Constitution – and without it, the Constitution never would have been ratified.

How then, can we claim that the founders would support the restriction of access to a book that really is just about an idea, to be accepted or rejected as you choose?

Personally, and maybe because I am such an avid reader, I would hate to have the choice of what book, by which Author was restricted to me because someone decided that it was inappropriate.... I believe I can make that choice without help. I do have preferences and dislikes, therefore there are many books / authors that I would not entertain..

But to throw a spanner in the works  I do maintain restrict the material my Children are exposed to and read .... I guess reflection is required here

NB: I did not know that there was such a thing as 'Banned books week' ... bizarre!

Just had a thought ..... My first year of High School (I was 13) in our English Lit class we had to read 'Lord of the flies' I recall it being a controversial book at the time ... we also had to read 'To kill a mockingbird' (which nearly drove me to insanity - I hated it!!!! (I believe it was because I could not associate with it on any level...) and also North hanger Abby - but notably Shakespeare, I developed a GREAT love for Shakespeare at this point ~ but anyways

Hmmmm, just as with History, we are exposed to various 'things' and only in retrospect do we understand that usually we have not seen the whole picture just a snippet that was determined as appropriate at that time....
