City needs to dig deeper...

Postby Howard » Sun, 19 Jul 2009 22:50:42 GMT

While I don't know what the criteria are for obtaining a solicitors permit, after my experience last night I must say the city should dig a bit deeper before rubber stamping them.
I was approached in my driveway by a very fast talking young man selling some nondescript publications, his presentation literature had no prices and he was unable to give me a satisfactory answer when I asked as to exactly where they would be coming from.
His story consisted of him being the grandson of someone who lived in the neighborhood whom I had never heard of, he was a student at UC and was on his way to an internship in London with the BBC. With the sale of these publications he would be reciving monies to aid in his travels. You can see where I am going with this...none of it adds up.
I placed a call to City of Monroe police dispatch and was informed a permit was obtained. But they would send a crusier to check him out.
Maybe I'm cynical but in this day and age the only time I engage a door-to-door visitor is when it is someone seeking an elected office.
Just a heads up to others.
Mark it zero, Dude.

I dare to venture that the individual was working for Southwestern. (I posted about this in the Monroe Chat section)

They are most certainly fast talkers, they are also to be expected every summer

I do not know what registering with the City entails, however, would advise anyone NOT to purchase the products!

I also received a visit (didn't see a bike) but swiftly told him to move along.... I am Home with Children, reluctant to answer the door to an unknown visitor, but especially one who wont boogaloo when told

ok beasly How do you know no one was dispatched? The calls are dispatched in a prioryt manor. I can understand how this does not seem right but if the officers on duty are working other calls.(car accidents, etc) they may not apprear on your street as fast as you would like them. If oyu listen to the scanners the patrol office may have been in the dispatchers officer and was given the information in person. The last statment can lead others to beelive our police do not respond. Knowing you, i know that was not your intention.

No, it wasn't my intention to make anyone believe that.
I had much more typed but I have just given up on the whole soliciting ordeal.

I understand and you know i have your best interest at heart in this matter. I just read it and thought it could be confusing to others. Stop by later today and check out the new work we did this weekend. I will be home after 4:30 today

******Thread HiJack in progress********

I forgot to call you. The baseball game is on the same day of a block party I am doing for our church in Middletown, so I won't be able to play. Thanks for asking and it would have been a blast.

*******now return to your regularly scheduled thread***********

It really surprises me that these book selling kids continue to hang around. Does anyone buy from (or involuntarily donate to) them?

Tall Blonde Kid...Yep. Came by on Friday. I gave him $5 for the effort. Kid was working me hard and deflected every generic objection I could toss at him. He hung in there long enough to earn the 5.

Love to see a thread started to dissuade the people of Monroe from purchasing and/or donating to scams has degenerated into a conversation of stopping by to see what work has been done; instead of what more our city can do to stop the permission given to such con jobs.

Last night this same blonde hair blue eyed young man showed up on my doorstep at 10:00pm and my wife answered the door! ( Yes i said at 10:00pm) The only thing out of his mouth was "Are you the mother of the house?" My wife responded with a "No". Then he asked "Can I speak to the mother of the house?" My wife then told him we had no children and shut the door. My wife talked to our neighbor and he said that they were at his house a few days before and he tried to push his way through their front door! When he finally told him he wasn't interested, the young man pointed to our house and ask if we had kids! Now if he was already told that we didn't have children why would he still show up at my house at 10:00 at night asking if i had kids! I called Monroe police and a officer arrived, but he just told us that the company that this young man worked for is a legit company. Maybe its just me but there have been a lot of people who work for legit companies who turned out to felons! My concern is why is a man going around scoping out peoples houses at 10:00 at night asking about kids, not to mention the robberies we just had in Monroe recently!
