Grrrrr - Ants

Postby HRHPatey » Wed, 20 May 2009 10:27:52 GMT

Seams like each year we have ants (they come in via our front door) I hate them!!!

I can safely treat the outside, but worry about the Cat when it comes to treating them inside.
Years previously I have used ant traps (raid) but will hide them under mats and in places where I don' t worry so much about an inquisitive kitty... We have also waited till the Children are in bed, put the cat in the basement and just gone hog wild with the spray (you have to know how much I hate ants :x ) Then I go around like a crazy lady cleaning every morsel of ant spray prior to anyone being exposed (both an exhaustive measure and possibly not really effective!)

My question ..... What is a 'safe' measure to use against eradicating ants but not your family pet ????

Just walking between our house and yours you can see dozens of tiny ant hills coming up through the cracks in the sidewalk!

We haven't had inside this year...yet. I keep looking every time I vacuum. There are so many on our front porch, I went ahead and sprayed the entry. So far that has kept off the door stoop. That's where they usually come in for us.

I HATE ants.

One day when living in California, I came home to find ants in my kitchen. They were not content to devour the contents of the cats bowl: they were everywhere - EVERYWHERE! Including inside my refrigerator and freezer. The FREEZER!!! They buggers came in on a tiny trail through the kitchen window and went in a thousand different directions once inside.

California is terrible for ants and termites. After much research and trial and error with traps and sprays, we finally sought professional help. For termites we went with the Sentricon units (you haven't lived until termites have fallen on your head) and for ants, Thermidor spray. It is applied outdoors around the perimeter of your homes foundation so there are no issues with your pets. For us (and remember it doesn't rain in Southern California), an application would last us 6 months to a year. It was amazing.

The animals were thrilled, too - no more sharing their kibble with the evil ants.

This morning I noticed Sugar sat quite stationary in the dining room.... upon investigation, she was watching an entire family of ants having a family reunion of sorts ...... noting that I had sprayed the dickens outta them outside ...I worried that any she might (lets say for the sake of weak stomachs) 'licked lovingly'

So I should look for Thermidor spray ???? And apply outside?

I hate ants .... and Ellie you're quite right, the wee buggers are appearing everywhere ..... I just don't want them in my House - ahhhhhhhhhh!

Family reunion, eh? Ugh....

Patey, you'll have to have Termidor applied by a pro. Terminix, Orkin, Scherzinger (I've heard a lot of good feedback about them) are a few pest control names that come to mind.

Always keep pet food in an airtight container and clean the ant trail with soap and water as they leave a scent to find there way back & forth. There are many home remedies for ants in the pet bowl and you can always try and see if one works for you.

1. Set your pets bowl inside another bowl or pan filled with water to build a sort of moat.
2. Put vasoline on the side of the bowl. (vasoline on the cats paw works great for hairballs)
3. Draw a chalk line around the bowl. Redraw wehn neccesary. This I've tried and it does work. Want proof? Go outside where you see a trail of ants on the sidewalk. Draw a line and start laughing!!
4. You can sprinkle baby powder, lemon juice, cucumber peel or cinnamon and it supposedly keeps the critters away.
5. Don't forget to caulk around windows, doors and baseboards.
6. You can spray the ants with vinegar to kill them instantly.
